Grief. There are times when Anne Tyler steers close to melodrama in her latest novel, The Beginner’s Goodbye. Protagonist Aaron Woolcott struggles with the sudden death of his wife, Dorothy. Tyler tells a story of the ways in which his destroyed life becomes rebuilt and how he finds a way to say goodbye to his wife. Readers who like love stories, especially those featuring characters with flaws we recognize as our own, are those most likely to enjoy this book. Book club members may want to consider this as a selection to read and discuss.
