Absolution. The second volume of William T. Vollmann’s carbon ideologies treatise is titled, No Good Alternative. Having come to grips with nuclear energy in the first part, Vollmann now turns his attention to natural gas, oil and coal. Vollmann explores our reliance on fossil fuels and the consequences of that for our planet. He writes with passion and empathy, asking for absolution from future generations over what this generation has done, explaining as the title indicates, we were not able to find another way. Through both volumes, Vollmann tries to listen and learn and understand why.
