Some of us want to fit in and others want to stand out. In her debut novel titled, White Elephant
, Julie Langsdorf brings us into a suburban neighborhood and the conflict between one homeowner whose new behemoth house dwarfs the neighbors, and irritates those who want things to remain the way they’ve been since the 1920s. The houses and the neighborhood provide the backdrop for the human relationships that are sparked by this conflict and the ways in which we are attracted and repelled. We don’t get to choose our neighbors, and in Langsdorf’s mix the results of an unintentional grouping provide an entertaining novel.
(I like it)
