Blue Ticket
Destiny. Fiction can help readers think about the different ways in which society could be organized and the ways in which individuals respond to social constraints. In her novel titled, Blue Ticket, Sophie Mackintosh describes a world in which motherhood is determined at the time of menarche when a young woman goes to a machine that spits out either a white ticket to set her on the path toward motherhood or a blue ticket that leads her to the insertion of permanent birth control. Protagonist Calla has been given a blue ticket, and the novel explores the ways in which she responds to this destiny.
Rating: Four-star (I like it)
