Boyd develops a fascinating protagonist, actor Lysander Reif taking him from England to Vienna in 1913 for psychoanalysis, and then to become a spy for England. The prose develops the action in light and shadows with great skill, keeping the plot moving along, while developing the complexity of Lysander’s life.
