The Lowland

Deception. I loved reading Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel, The Lowland, for so many reasons. She presents a cast of characters that I came to care about, despite the tragic deceptions that framed their relationships. She describes places, especially Calcutta, in ways that helped me feel I was there. Lahiri presents the lives of individuals who came to the United States from India, as well as the lives of those who remained in Calcutta. Lahiri captures the ways in which love within family can be so strong that even deception cannot overpower it.
