Friendship. Some long-term friendships endure and others dissolve. Claire Messud explores the friendship between Julia and Cassie in a novel titled,
The Burning Girl. Following a summer during which the adolescent girls were inseparable, they return to school and drift apart. Using finely written prose, vividly descriptive language and mood setting narrative, Messud explores this change and the ways in which secrets and what is not known can be what is essential. The novel explores alienation and does so with great skill.
