The Undertaker's Daughter
Inheritance. The protagonist of Sara Blaedel’s novel titled, The Undertaker’s Daughter, has been living what seems to a contented life in Copenhagen, Denmark. A widow in her forties, Ilka Nichols Jensen works as a school photographer. When she gets the news that her estranged father, whom she hasn’t seen in three decades, has died, she also learns that she has an inheritance: a funeral home in Racine, Wisconsin. With that set up, Blaedel puts Ilka into situations that strain credulity and provide the elements of a good murder mystery. While the novel brings one mystery to a satisfying conclusion, Blaedel leaves a cliffhanger that will please some readers and frustrate others. I assume there will be another novel featuring Ilka as she continues to struggle with what to do with the funeral home she inherited.
Rating: Four-star (I like it)
