Wax. Readers who love historical fiction are those most likely to be delighted by Edward Carey’s novel titled, Little, the story of the orphan who became Madame Tussaud. After the death of tiny Marie’s parents, she is apprenticed to a man who makes sculptures out of wax. Marie learns this art from him, and they find themselves living in Revolutionary Paris and exhibiting wax heads. We all know what happened to heads during the French Revolution, and Carey places Marie in the middle of the action. If you’ve ever wondered how Madame Tussaud got started, you’re likely to love this novel.
