Before the Ruins

We gradually learn about five key characters, what happened in the past and why one character has now gone missing. A game played by the characters as children involving a lost diamond necklace, fake for the game, and possibly a real one to be discovered, takes form in different ways in the past and in the present. Life is often not what we want it to be, and frequently not at all like the one we dreamed of while young and naïve. Gosling uses this complex structure and interesting characters to help us think about how we became who we are, and how we feel about how our lives have turned out.
