Her writing is what’s constant: a sharp eye and the ability to choose words with care and precision. There’s a sensation of loneliness that captures a reader, whether found in a whale or a person. There’s a close examination of the self and a way of seeing distant places in a new way. There were times while reading this that I felt as if I were following Jamison’s own curiosity, examining something until sense began to penetrate her big brain.
