The Night Always Comes

Intensity. There’s concentrated intensity in every scene of Willy Vlautin’s novel titled, The Night Always Comes. Set in Portland over the course of a few days, we encounter all the things a person will do to make their dreams come true. Protagonist Lynette works multiple jobs trying to scrape together a way to buy the home where she, her mother and her brother have been renting. Vlautin forces readers to not blink as we observe the lives of people trying their best to stay above water. We feel Lynette’s hunger and anger and cannot look away as we watch mother and daughter come to terms with each other and with the next phase of their lives. The story is riveting, the characters complex, and the intensity captures the struggle of those on the margins to achieve the American dream.
