Black Sun Rising

Blood. In Matthew Carr’s novel titled, Black Sun Rising, protagonist private detective Harry Lawton gets a plum assignment in London to investigate a murder in Barcelona and the circumstances surrounding a mysterious large payment made by the victim shortly before death. Set in 1909, the novel captures all the atmospherics of that time period. Harry uncovers other mysteries in Barcelona involving murders in which the victim’s blood has disappeared. As the case progresses, we feel anxiety with Harry and his epilepsy, and we learn about the scientists who were promoting eugenics at that time.
