Choices. The second installment of Alexander McCall Smith’s Detective Varg series is a novel titled, The Talented Mr. Varg. Smith fans will enjoy the author’s dry wit, moderate pacing, and compassion for all characters. Things are never as they appear for the Department of Sensitive Crimes, and Varg chooses to investigate and help in ways that are not often linear. Varg often tends to choose mercy rather than justice. As always with Smith, the way things turn out always seem to be just right.
