This Little Family

Trauma. Steel yourself from being caught in an undertow as you read Ines Bayard’s debut novel titled, This Little Family. We learn the irreversible action protagonist Marie takes within the first few pages of the novel. The remainder of the novel pulls us into trying to understand Marie’s response to the trauma of rape. As the light goes out of Marie’s life, we find ourselves in the darkness with her as she responds in the ways that make sense to her troubled mind. This finely written novel is difficult to read because of the content. Those readers who persist will find insight into the effects of trauma and the choices that seem inevitable but unnecessary.
