In his novel titled, Memorial, Bryan Washington pulls readers into the love between Benson and Mike who live together in Houston. Just after Mike’s mother, Mitsuko, lands in Texas for a visit, Mike departs to spend time in Osaka with his estranged father who is dying. Neither Benson nor Mitsuko anticipated living with each other, and Washington shows how some relationships can be built with strength quickly. The changes faced by these characters transform them profoundly and rapidly, and thanks to Washington’s fine writing, we see ourselves in their faces that may seem at first quite unlike us.
