The Book of Joan

Skin. Fans of dystopian post-apocalyptic fiction are those readers most likely to enjoy reading Lidia Yuknavitch’s novel titled, The Book of Joan. Set in 2049, most of Earth has been destroyed, and a wealthy cohort lives in a complex orbiting the planet and trying to steward resources to adapt and survive. Body modification involves odd skin grafts and telling stories on skin, one of which is an updated story of Joan of Dark, who fought against Jean de Men. Yuknavitch’s prose shows off her literary skills and fans of literary fiction will appreciate her well-chosen words and phrases.
